The surveyor inspects our historic steel ship one more time.
After all those weeks of hard work, it is finally time to take a look at what we’ve achieved and how to continue.
Overall the surveyor is really satisfied with all the work we and the lads from the shipyard put into Flying Coney.
He definitely is a ship enthusiast and all his tips and knowledge help a lot with this refit project.

This video is a bit different. A lot of talking and no working, but we hope you enjoy it anyway. 😀

I have enjoyed all your videos with your journey. My partner and I bought a 60 year 0ld Dutch North Sea beam trawler that had been converted for pleasure vessel. It had been sitting in a harbour being neglected of essential maintenance for many years and the previous owner had basically made it unfit for sea as he was turning it into a residential apartment. That was 6 years ago, we bought a rusting steel trawler that was floating and livable. Needless to say we have had a similar journey to yourselves and when we finally saved up enough money to have our ship out of the water, I made it sea worthy and sailed it to a floating dock. We had discussed sand blasting as this was a concept I had experienced decades ago and understood, but the dock owner assured me it was much better to hydro blast as it would acheive the same result with far less mess and waste (also considerably cheaper). Much easier to clean up the residue and put into recycle waste stream. I trusted him. He was right. We also trusted him to spray the five coats of two pack paints. Then the tie coat to allow the antifoul paint to adhere. That was one year ago. We also had our hull surveyed and had a few puddle welds done. Much other welding of Gunwhale stantions, some deck plating and other sundry welding was undertaken. This last two weeks we invested in upgrading our electrics to have two solar arrays and completely stripped out the old charger, inverter and associated wiring for completely new Victron system professionally installed. We hope this will get us off marina electric (horredously expensive) so that once we have paid for it, we will be saving money by generating our own power 24/7. We are not finished with getting the ship fit for our adventures yet, but we hope to be ready in one or two years. It is not easy doing a project like this with just two regular salaries coming in. Keep producing your journey videos, it proves we are not the only mad ones who love the challenge of old steel vessels 🙂

HydroBlasting sounds good .... much cleaner and the flash rusting is great for phosphoric acid priming.

You have indeed delivered an achievement. I was honestly thinking what bigins you guys on! but now i see it will work. I would like to give another tip, buy a good mig welding machine and start welding yourself. It's easy to learn. It's really not that hard and you save a lot of money.

this is great to see that you are doing so well, there are always many people that have opinions on how to do everything, I think they mean well but every job has to be tackled in a way that suits the situation, I think you are doing it correctly . after all this is also your home so you have the best of both worlds but only one to maintain . keep Jurgen handy i am sure he can direct you on many things I know you have to pay for his expertise but it is well worth it as with his knowledge you will be able to get the right information and do the job once .
