Connection of Piraeus and Izmir with Rebetiko Music:

The connection of Piraeus and Izmir with rebetiko music is rooted in deep historical and cultural ties. Rebetiko emerged in the late Ottoman Empire, in the early 20th century, and became popular in port cities like Piraeus and Izmir, especially among immigrant communities.

• Piraeus: As Greece’s largest port city, Piraeus is one of the main centers of rebetiko music. In the early 20th century, refugees from Anatolia, especially from Izmir, settled in Piraeus, where this music genre developed and flourished. Piraeus is also where rebetiko music merged with Greek folk music, showcasing a variety of instruments and rhythms.

• Izmir: Izmir was a major cultural and commercial hub during the Ottoman period, known for its multicultural population. Rebetiko music was performed by many musicians born in or influenced by Izmir. The city’s musical diversity is reflected in the rhythmic structure and melancholic melodies of rebetiko music.

• Metikoi: Metikoi is a term used in ancient Greece for immigrant groups living in cities like Athens who did not have full citizenship rights. Rebetiko music often reflects the emotions and experiences of such groups living on the margins of society, struggling with the challenges of urban life. Refugees who settled in Piraeus and Izmir were seen as metikoi, and their cultural heritage became the foundation of rebetiko music.
