Beijing is getting ready to host the latest Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. The event is held every three years and this year takes place against the backdrop of slowing economic growth in China. Beijing's loans to Africa have fallen drastically since their 2016 peak, while the conditions it imposes on its spending there are coming under increasing scrutiny. DW asks veteran US diplomat and author David Shinn about whether Beijing is more interested in political or economic influence.

DW editors could you plz show your points clearly? On the one hand, DW says that China's foreign loans are decreasing, but on the other hand the title is about the debt trap.
- what does DW want China to do? lend more or less?
- or if Germany willing to fill the loan gap?
- Or is Germany willing to offer Africa a loan interest rate lower than 2.7%? According to World Bank data, the interest rate on Chinese loans for African government foreign debt is 2.7%, while that on Western loans is 5%, almost twice that of China.
- or if DW is just talking nonsense since it can not find any other topics, but DW would emphasize that China collapses again every few days?

From my point of view, as a Chinese who works in Africa now, China does have a good reputation in terms of Economy Boosting in Africa, while France and UK gained a bad reputation on Colonization, however, if you ask most of African people, which country they want to go, they will say UK or US or France without a second thought, they sell UK US flags everywhere except for Chinese flag, China is doing good on Physical Money, as for Cultural Influences, China still takes a long way to go, even Japan and Korea are do better. There are 2 reasons: social media differences and Language Barrier. No one knows whether China will take a lead in the Cultural Aspect, but times will tell. I do hope African countries can grow better and stronger, people don't suffer anymore. God bless🙏

Of course China are making money from it's investments, what does the west do. China unlike the west is not just taking though it is helping to build the infrastructure for trade and teaching skills, they do not just employ Chinese to build the projects they train people from the host country to be engineers and maintain what is constructed and to build more by themselves. China is also building modern schools and hospitals it is helping to improve Africa in a way the west failed to do.
