Hey, a lot of people might be upset by this substory because racial discrimination and all that shit, but honestly the fact that Yakuza 3 was willing to address this issue back in 2009, when a lot of Japanese media wouldn't even bother with the idea of mixed race relationships and the plight of mixed raced children in Japan was very progressive for its time.

Alright, because I can see there is some confusion going on here, I'll try to clear things up: It's not a romantic preference-thing with Riona. It's not that she doesn't romantically like Mitsuo because he's black. She doesn't like him as a person because he's black. Later in the game, we learn she has a hang up about her burn scar. The writers put that scene after the Riona and Haruka scene to tell you that Riona based Mitsuo only on how he looked and thought he was weird/disgusting. Like how the other kids thought Riona's scar was weird/disgusting. Earlier in the game, Riona accuses Mitsuo of stealing, but in the context of the scene where all the other kids were accusing each other, the player wasn't meant to think anything of it. Now you have the context for Riona and why it's important she apologizes to Mitsuo later on.
