Gator breathes through hole in frozen water

Here in Florida, we're familiar with gator behavior in warm climates — but how do they survive in the freezing cold? After temperatures dropped in Texas last week, an alligator was found completely stuck under a frozen pond at a rescue center. Gator Country owner Gary Saurage says the reptile survives by pushing his snout through a hole in the ice to breathe and slowing the beat of its heart. #gator #alligator #Texas #BeaumontTexas #GatorCountry

Existed millions of years. A little ice won't end the species.

Can go a year without eating and use just a part of their heart to pump blood to vital organs. Also, fight bacterial infections by producing antibiotics in the blood. An amazing animal!

They've survived the dinosaur era & still here, they must know what they're doing.

These creatures are the ultimate survivors. Incredible how resilient they are.

Exactly why they are 90 million years old. Pretty rad.

Alligators do not hibernate, they brumate. Brumation and Hibernation are both stages of dormancy, although with crocs and alligators its more commonly and correctly referred to Brumation.

As an alligator myself, this guy is speaking the truth! 🐊

It's theorized that slowing their metabolism this drastically is how they survived the atmospheric shift all those millions of years ago

Yeah they sure survived through adaptation. Adaptation is the key.

Heart is beating 3 beats per/min. Amazing.

That's amazing! By the way, it's not "hibernation" but "brumation": a lethargic state that some ectothermic animals, such as many reptiles, assume during cold conditions. Partly analogous to hibernation, but physiological differences include that brumation does not depend on stored fat, but rather on reduced metabolic activity.
