for the wax discussion - I'm guessing the wax acts completely different when in contact with human skin as opposed to metal

The reason why wax is used in both scenarios is because in the case of the surfboard, water likely has a lower viscosity than the wax meaning a better stick for the surfer, whilst keeping water on a skateboard doesn't work, so wax is used as a lubricant layer

In Archery you use wax to keep your string from fraying.

Skate/surf wax behaves differently when dry vs wet hence why its used for opposite applications in either scenario 🙃
