From the British perspective, they were nearly bankrupted by the Seven Years War in Europe, which their adversary, France, exploited in North America in what we called the French and Indian War. We sometimes forget that the American colonies could have been either wiped out or have become French if the British army had not protected us. The Tea Tax, the Stamp Act, and the other taxes we called the Intolerable Acts were levied to pay for the British protecting us.
