In 1799, French soldiers were building a fort near the Egyptian village of Rosetta.
While preparing the ground - The soldiers unearthed a dark grey granite stone that stood around 4 feet tall and 3 feet wide.
The stone was inscribed with 3 languages. One greek, the other 2 were forms of Egyptian writing that were unreadable at the time.
When the British defeated the French in Egypt, the treaty of Alexandria was signed, which requested for the stone to be handed over to Britain. In 1801 the stone was transported to the British Museum where it has remained every since.
Scholars began to study the stone’s insciption and in 1822 a French linguist named Jean Champollion matched several characters from the three texts and an alphabet of hieroglyphics was deciphered.
Shortly after scholars were able to find explanation for the pyramids and many of the mysteries of ancient Egypt.
Egypt formally requested that the British return the Rosetta Stone to its original home in 2003 but the brits refused explaining that ancient artefacts belong not to their home country but to all of humanity.
So what do you think? Should the Rosetta Stone should be returned home? Let me know in the comments what you think.
