I was a firefighter working that day in a neighboring agency and remember hearing the dispatch on the radio having no idea who it was. Godspeed Mark.

I was at Ulawatu in 1978. Mark Foo turned up and ripped the place apart. Throwing backhand re-entries in 6 - 8 Ulu's, like it was a beach break. Made me realise that the Hawaiian guys surf waves in Hawaii which have a lot more grunt than most other places around the world.

I'm pretty sure Marks first wave at Mavericks was not his last, Bradshaw who had already surfed Mavs on a number of occasions, had talked to him in the line up asking him if he was enjoying his first session and Mark replied that he was having a blast

Story I heard was that the surfer on the wave behind said he felt a bump, and didn’t think much about it.

Sad. His buddy from the show H3O, Mike Latronic used to edit videos at Leeward CC, when I worked there.

Smart guy. Read "North Shore Chronicles" by Bruce Jinkens to learn about Foo-Bradshaw rivalry

IDK if 20ft Mavericks should be considered "moderate".

This was not a big day by Mavericks standards
Keep in mind that the Hawaiian big wave crew surf the big waves in Hawaii first and then chase the swell to California. Bradshaw and Foo caught the red to Cali with not much sleep. He probably hit his head or his leash got caught on the rocks. In 2011 Sion Milonski another Hawaiian big wave matador also drowned Mavs.

It was his first and last wave there maybe he should have warmed up on some waves that weren't as big as that day to get familiar with the surroundings
