Can you please explain when particle (に )(へ) are used with the verb ikimasu.?

Can you please explain why the word 'okimasu' (wake up, put) comes under 2 different groups even though they sound same and they are written same? And based on what they group these verbs? So, because of this confusion we need to memorize each verb group forms also?
