My psychiatrist asked “have you tried making alarms and writing down lists” like.. dude I have a list of lists I have alarms spanning hours that’s not the thing I was looking for

My therapist told me to tell people who tell me that, that it is like telling someone with diabetes to fix their blood sugar by sheer will alone (no meds or food). I like this example too.

As someone with driving anxiety I can't tell you for how many people that seems to be a valid advice... it's ridiculous

ADHD is a disability and should be recognized and treated like one. I could write an entire essay on this.

"if you're depressed, just be happy" "if you have anxiety, just chill out" IT DOESNT WORK THAT WAY 😭

When I drove for the first time I asked my adoption dad how to reverse.. he said put it in reverse and feel it. When I asked for clarification he said "feel it!"
I proceeded to back directly up into a clothing donation bin outside the gas station 😅

EXACTLY!!!! Like, maam. I tell myself that every time I start the dishes and now I’m cleaning out the garage saying “ once I’m done I just need to finish loading the dishwasher”.😂😂😂

It’s the same thing as telling a deaf person all you need to do to hear is hear (I’m deaf)

Telling someone anything with ADHD how to do something will automatically make them not want to even try lmao. But I do find it’s easier for me to push the thoughts of what else I have to do in the back of my mind and just push myself to finish one task at a time. It’s NOT EASY and is sometimes more mentally exhausting than juggling 5 tasks at once but at least then I have one thing finished and not 5 things half done lmao.

It feels like someone saying "oh the best way to weed your garden is just to get in there and pull up weeds!" Except they're weeding a bunch of stuff with simple, shallow roots while your garden is full of thistles and dandelions and a few walnut saplings. "Just focus on one thing at a time" simply isn't going to happen. "Just do one thing at a time" might - but you have to have extra tools to deal with the other thoughts that come up. If you're doing physical chores, maybe that's putting a basket in the doorway so any time you find something that belongs in another room, you put it in the basket instead of wandering off and getting stuck elsewhere. If you're doing the kind of work where you sit still, maybe that's having a piece of paper next to you as an "idea parking lot" to jot something down. Or maybe you deliberately don't do just one thing at a time, and instead do two! Before I was medicated I would often listen to podcasts at work, because while I was a lot less efficient than if I was able to focus solely on work, I was a lot more consistent with focusing on work at all. Now that I'm medicated I can't often do that anymore because meds make my brain run mostly single-track

I understand the analogy and everything but the funny thing is the easiest way for me to learn how to drive *was* to just get in the car and practice driving 😭

I struggle MORE when I have only one task to focus on. I never multitask because that isn't a thing, but I do switch-task. It keeps the inner chaos goblin occupied and it gets everything done.

Thank you. I feel like showing this to my dad, because I was recently diagnosed with adhd.

I’m so tired of being told this I can’t wait to move out and go to the mountains all by myself and live in a quiet place where nobody is yelling at me or nagging me about how I need to pay attention and do what I’m told… as soon as I save up enough I’m out of here!!!! 😍🤠🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏻‍♀️

On the next episode of, “No. You’re not crazy. . . ”, Thank you for articulating these experiences so masterfully. I can’t express how helpful it is to be reminded that so many ADHD struggles are compounded by Neurotypical Gaslighting, even if it is out of a genuine desire to help.
