The funny thing is that Polish is still related to those words :
We use żmija for a specific type of snake, the most popular in Poland (viper)
Pielęgniarka is the nurse but when we call out for the nurse in the hospital we say "siostro" (sister)
Miłość means love, loving is kochanie (also a way to call a loved one "kochanie!" ) and lubić kogoś means to like someone; in old books you can see a term "lubować" or "miłować" both refering to love and affection.
Strażak is the fire figter and he fights pożary (fires).

At the end polish woman reacted like that because "kochanie" in polish means "darling" it s a cute form for someone but in belarusian it means "love" so it was cufe for her, I know it bc im polish, thanks me later 😊❤

In Russian we have "уж", that means grass snake, seems like the word is related to Polish "wąż"

In Bulgarian we have the words "rodina" and "milost" but they have a different meaning. "Rodina" means "motherland" and "milost" means "mercy"

If we're going to get real nitpicky, Polish does have _pożarnik, _ but it's considered archaic by some. And the reason why _strażnik_ seems so weird is because it's derived from
_straż pożarna_ (lit. 'fire-guard'). So, purely semantically, a Polish firefighter is more a "(fire) guard". 🤔😕

To add to the mess, many Polish cities also have a _straż miejska (SM)_ (lit. 'city guard', but really municipal police). And an SM officer is also called -- you guessed it -- _strażnik._ 😮😂

Although Polish has the verb _lubić, _ (related to pan-Slavic ljubav/ljubiti), the meaning in Polish is more "to like" or "to appreciate".
