The President needs a new speech write. The first Memorial Day was 155 years ago but was not declared be “retired Union general James Garfield” but rather by former Union General and Commander in Chief of the Union veterans group Grand Army of the Republic John A Logan. There was a General Garfield, who went on to become the 20th President. Sadly, he was assassinated after serving only 200 days.
