Why cant you have a smear if you are pregnant?

Smear tests, also known as pap smears or cervical screening tests, are done to identify who might be at risk of cervical cancer. They are not a test for cancer, and you may have heard you shouldnt have it if you are pregnant.

However, even if you are pregnant, if you have any actual symptoms of cervical cancer, like abnormal bleeding, discharge or pain, you should stil be checked by your doctor urgently. They can still investigate you for cancer even if they are not going to perform the smear test itself.
