Soohorang (Korean: 수호랑) is the official mascot of the 2018 Winter Olympics, and Bandabi (Korean: 반다비) is the official mascot of the 2018 Winter Paralympics, with both events to be held in Pyeongchang, Gangwon, South Korea.[1][2] Soohorang is a white tiger and Bandabi is an Asiatic black bear.[3] The mascots were selected through a national tender process held in 2014 and were approved of by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on June 2, 2016.
Soohorang is a white tiger. The tiger is an animal closely related to Korean mythology, and is a symbol of trust, strength, and protection. Its name is derived from the Korean words "sooho" (수호) and "horangi" (호랑이), which means "protection" and "tiger" respectively.[5]
