The Story of the Wolf River Coils Sporty Forty

Well the first Sporty Forty Coil I had didn't work so great so I sent it back to WRC, Gary from WRC graciously sent me another Sporty Forty Coil. Long story short, after lots of testing I got it working with a 18 inch extension rod and 6, 11ft 6 inch radials. Thanks to Joe WD5JOE, Kirk N5WKM, Eric N5EST and Big L KB5ZZB talking me through this. Time now to activate a park (POTA) for the real test. it's getting a 1.4 SWR now

Your findings are typical for a new antenna set up and trying it in different locations. With your fine antenna analyzer it will tell you whether your antenna is too long or too short so that is a benefit. Then you adjust your radials to bring the antenna into resonance where you want it. The same thing applies to a Buddipole or Buddistick or any of the Wolf River products. Also an SWR of 2:1 or less is fine unless you need to run 500 watts…. For low power (for me less than 50 watts) I don’t worry about SWR so much. Then I can spend more time making contacts. I also find that raising the radial (I usually use one) about 3 feet on a portable electric fence stick you can find at any farm store works the best and tends to be directional.

You might try putting the coil on top of your extension, just for the experience.

What did you use for an extension? I have the chameleon whip also and would rather not purchase the wrc 213” whip just for the sporty 40.
