My grandfather's question to me was always, "How close were you able to get before shooting?" His challenge to me was to get as close as possible before considering a shot. He used a 12ga shotgun with buckshot for deer so he had to get right next to them before taking his shot. Grandpa was old-school when it came to hunting but living up to his standard has made me a much more competent hunter than many of my friends.
I'm old enough that my eyes just aren't clear enough anymore so I've had to swap to a scoped rifle for ethical considerations. Accepting my limitations and knowing I needed to use a scope for hunting was a kick in the pants but I guess these things happen as you grow older, LOL!

The true skill is getting as close as you can to the animals, long distance isn't hunting, great video mark!

Mark, thanks for talking about this issue in the hunting community. For me when I am hunting, the thrill is to get as close as possible before harvesting the animal. You are correct in your statement that it is up to us as hunters to not only teach, but to practice ethical hunting practices. Thanks again for all that You and Sam do to support the sport of shooting.

Great thoughts Sir! Completely agree with everything and especially the respect part. Personally I never go past 300 m when hunting reindeer with my 308 and typically less than 200 m. Keep up your great work :) Regards from Iceland.

👏👏👏👏 thank you. Especially the part where you mention about our actions having an effect on our fellow hunters.

Well done Mark! Thank you for a very balanced view. I am from the U.S. - in my late 60s and have been hunting for over 50 years. I was raised on an ethic called "fair chase." It places the animal hunted in the equation - not just the hunter and his gun. Technology has changed the hunting game tremendously. Not many people want to talk about ethics these days. Just because we have the technology to shoot out to a 1, 000 yds doesn't make it good ethics regarding hunting. I agree with you - respect for the animal & it is about skill: hunter vs. animal. Rather than thinking how far can I shoot an animal, I wish more people would ask, 'how close can I get?' Thank you for all your videos.

Top man well done for addressing some of the problems that respectful hunter's are facing.
It is fantastic that you and Sam have raised the issues on your channel because I believe a lot of long range hunter's are probably viewers of yours.
I am a hunter and a long range target shooter in the UK.
Please keep the fantastic content coming 👍

In my opinion, this the best video you’ve ever made.
To my hunter brothers and sisters, act with dignity.
To yourself, and your prey. You’re taking a life from this earth. Do it swiftly.
And as an old cane cockie once said “don’t shoot nothing ya can’t run and get quick “

I love all your videos (and this is coming from a Kiwi haha) and find them very useful, particularly the intelligent, practical approach and comprehensive fundamentals. Keep up the great work.

Also it's commendable to promote such a solid, ethical perspective

As an old old rifle, pistol and bow hunter, the observation of yours, to me, is spot on. There are so many variables from the platform to skill level of the shooter. It would be great if thousands would view this video. 👏👏👍

a guide here as told me about the lost game animals on long range 6.5 creedmoor at long range has been an example, , its used on elk and it does not have the power at over 500 yard ranges to kill elk, if that thats what he said, , , , among other cartridges as well, i have several 6.5 creedmoors and i agree, , , unless i was not going to shoot over 300 yards, , i would leave the creedmoor home when it comes to elk, , , , but i hunt to get into reasonable range, , , hunting is not the same as target shooting, , , , your video was the best i have seen on the subject, , it should be seen by all

Thanks Mark! I have taken 3-5 white tail deer each year for the past 50 years. I use a 24" barreled .270 Win using a 150 grain Remington Core Lokt soft nose bullet. Even though that load delivers 1270 ft lbs at 500 yds, I will NOT shoot beyond that range. I have come across too many horribly wounded animals dying from infected wounds from poorly placed shots. I respect the animals enough to practice with my rifle and know their anatomy in order to assure they die quickly. I know for a fact, (I keep a logbook) that only 3 deer I have shot in 50+ years have not dropped in their tracks, and of those they took only a step or two before dying. Know your rifle, know the ballistics of your load, practice often, and respect your quarry, and NEVER, EVER shoot at a running animal.

Thanks Mark, you are an honorable man! Well done. Cheers

Ethical shots to me do not require me dialing the scope in. I limit my shots to the maximum point blank range of the particular caliber. That would put even the 300 win mag under 400 yds. a pinpoint shot at 400 is still an incredible shot.

Mark, great topic and take on the issues related to long range hunting. I totally agree that a hunt should be much more about the stalk than a dicey shot. Teddy Roosevelt was a fair chase hunter; I think he was right.
