Adam Savage was invited behind the scenes of HBO’s House of the Dragon during its season 2 production! In the coming weeks, we'll take you into the workshops on site where the show's incredible team painstakingly craft action props, engineer dragon-riding rigs, and design the iconic trappings of Westeros. In this first episode, House of the Dragon's Master Armourer Tim Lewis shows Adam a selection of the hero and stunt swords created for the show!

The aluminum vs aluminium back and forth was like a sword fight.

I do like how Adam is able to subtly guide some of the shop guys who may not be 100% experienced in explaining what they do to a lay audience. He can understand and speak their language, but explains it to us in ours.

You know that feeling when your face hurts from smiling too much? I have that feeling everytime I see Adam and the Tested crew enjoying prop making on that level. It´s like "I love it already, stop competing with me for loving

Adam's enthusiasm for things will never cease to make me smile.

i love the giddy smile on the blacksmiths face when he fooled adam savage (the ultimate maker idol) into thinking his bolt was hand peened with a hammer.

It was an honour to meet you Adam, I really enjoyed talking all things swords and pattern welding. Hope you’ll be back for season 3! Cheers, Jamie @pitstoneforge

Tim, this is lovely to see. Covid got in the way for our meeting when the first season was being shot. I am cheering you on from the shadows. You guys go! Bring on the awesome!

I love how Adam is passionate and knowledgeable enough about swords that he reacts exactly as I would in getting to experience these swords, ask about the details, and especially the opportunity to handle and examine Peter Johnsson's work!

Some 30 years ago, I was at the Medieval Week in the town of Visby on the island of Gotland, Sweden. I was in medieval garb, as I was a member of the Swedish chapter of the SCA, when I spotted a guy who was the same age as me and wearing a helmet, mail shirt and carrying a sword. We struck up a conversation, and it turned out that he had made most of what he was wearing himself. The sword was ground from a blade spring and one of the very first he had made. We became friends, and I've been privileged to see his skills develop through the years. Peter Johnsson is one of those rare people who combines art, craftsmanship and science into a whole. To wield one of his swords is to truly experience what a sword should be, and we have both been able to find out what the originals feel like by visiting museums and handling the real stuff. I have moved on to other interests, but Peter's stuff will always fascinate me.

This workshop and HoT production is like a spiritual successor to WETA and their incredible work on Lord of the Rings. Its great to see such commitment.

I love how Adam is enthusiastic about the swords. The creation process, the look, the feels about swords. I also would be in awe about them. I just love swords.

Excellent work guys 😊

13:36 an ear dagger with a built in astrolabe is such a neat idea for a famous sea captain.

Glad to see the effort they still put into these props.

I'm a Historical European Martial Arts practitioner based in Canada, and can definitely confirm aluminium is great for making swords that whack each other. Our trainers are made from (afaik) aircraft-grade. The only issue is the assembly--they tend to rattle a lot after extended use, which is part of why we use steel blunt simulators for sparring, and the former for training and drills

Love the detail of these props, it's a shame you don't get to see more of them onscreen.

A good friend of mine was out walking his dog on a very foggy morning in the woodlands of South-East England last year... when he stumbled across a entire huge outdoor set from House of Dragon with nobody around.
He sent our group chat some incredible photos of him and his dog in Westeros, caught us very offguard 😆
