Donald Trump has named Ohio Senator JD Vance as his running mate. Vance is a 39-year-old Marine Corps veteran who rose to prominence with his 2016 memoir "Hillbilly Elegy," that tells of the hardships he faced growing up in Appalachian Kentucky and Ohio. When Trump first ran for president that same year, Vance called him "dangerous" and "unfit for office." However, Vance was introduced to the Trump family when Donald Trump Jr. became a fan of his book. He eventually met with Trump as president in 2021.

Perfect fit for Trump. More than willing to sell out his convictions and morals for any power he can get. When he initially came into politics, he was a never-trumper, and there are plenty of clips of him stating this. Once he was elected and saw how the tide was turning, like a lot of Republicans he latched his wagon onto Trump. The whiplash seeing his early interviews cut against his newer Fox ones is jarring.

For those who are trying to understand this pick, Trump appears to have AZ, NV, GA, and NC in the bag based on polling, so he needs at least one rust belt state: PA, MI, WI, or MN to win with Vance from Ohio. Also, Vance on paper is the embodiment of Trump's referenced "forgotten man" born in poverty, divorced parents, mother struggled with drugs, joined the Marines after 9/11 and from there became very successful as a business man, writer, and Senator at only 39 years old.
