Our universe holds many planetary systems. The one we live in is called the Solar System. We call it the Solar System because we use the word "solar" to describe things related to our star… the only star in our Solar System… called the Sun! The Sun gets its name from the Latin word "Solis." And if you know the word for "Sun" in Spanish, "Sol," then it all makes sense why we get the name "Solar System."
Hi, I'm Mr. Weather. In this lesson, you'll learn more about the celestial bodies that make up our planetary system.
Our Solar System is made up of ONE star, EIGHT planets, and many other small celestial bodies such as moons, dwarf planets, asteroids, and comets.
The Solar System is within the Milky Way Galaxy in the Orion Arm, orbiting the galaxy's center at nearly 515,000 miles per hour. It takes about 230 million years for our Solar System to orbit one time around the galactic center of the Milky Way.
The planets in our solar system have many different atmospheres, but Earth is the only planet in the neighborhood with a suitable environment for life as we know it. This makes our solar system unique - because it is the only one we know of with intelligent life.
The planets that orbit the Sun, from closest to farthest, are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Most Villains Eat Many Jelly Sandwiches Until Nauseous.
In between Mars and Jupiter lies the Asteroid Belt. Beyond Neptune is the Kuiper Belt. We have five dwarf planets, Ceres, Pluto, Eris, Makemake, and Haumea. Ceres is the lone wolf residing in the Asteroid Belt, while all the other Dwarf planets are within the Kuiper Belt.
There are over 200 moons in our Solar System, with our Moon being the most important since it is our closest neighbor. Next time, we'll explore the planets a little more in-depth!
