3 Great watercolor exercises to improve your water and brush control 🖌️

When you’re starting with any new painting medium, it’s smart to spend time getting to know how it works via simple exercises, and building up basic skills that will help you move on to more challenging pieces with greater confidence and ease.

Water and brush control are two essential skills that will come into play, no matter what subject it is we would like to move on to painting (landscapes, portraits, animals, still life, etc.).

🌟 Here are three great watercolor exercises for beginners, which will help you develop these two basic skills:

👉 Irregular lines
Load up your paintbrush and, starting close to one edge of your paper, create a single "line" that has variation in thickness. Vary the pressure you exert on your brush to create thinner or thicker sections.

👉 Painting triangles (or any other simple shape)
Paint in triangles of different sizes/dimensions with flat or variegated washes. You can also practice creating blooms by dropping in a second color while that initial layer is still wet.

👉 Curved strokes and C-strokes
Practice getting comfortable rotating your hand/arm and changing directions, as well as visualizing a "path" to create curves.
