In Two Days: 161,000 Children Vaccinated Against Polio in Gaza

In just two days, over 161,000 children were vaccinated as part of our two round polio vaccination campaign that aims to reach over 640,000 children.

A polio vaccination campaign was launched on the 1st of September 2024 across the Gaza Strip to prevent the spread of circulating variant type 2 poliovirus (cVDPV2).

The vaccination campaign is expected to run for the coming days, aiming to ensure reach, particularly in low-coverage areas. Teams operate daily from 6:00 am to 2:00 pm, with mobile units extending reach across the area.
UNICEF, in collaboration with the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MoH), the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), and partners, has delivered 1,230,000 doses of oral polio vaccine type 2 (nOPV2) into Gaza, along with vaccine carriers, refrigerators, and cold boxes. An additional 400,000 doses are expected to enter the Gaza Strip in the coming days. These doses will be sufficient to deliver two rounds of vaccines to over 640,000 children under ten years of age.
