The Most POPULAR Tent in the WORLD? X-MID PRO 2

Is the X-MID Pro 2 the most popular tent in the world? The demand this tent is experiencing seems to suggest it is. Having just received one myself I take a look to see what makes the Durston X-Mid Pro worth the Hype.

Response from Dan Durston regarding the seam tape:

“There is really only one factory in the world that builds the highest quality bonded DCF tents, so the X-Mid Pro is built at the same factory that builds most of the high quality DCF tents on the market today (e.g. Tarptent, Locus Gear, Big Agnes, Samaya, Gossamer Gear and others). Even the companies who build elsewhere (e.g. HMG, Zpacks) still use this exact seam tape. As such, the materials, and construction techniques used in the X-Mid Pro have a long and proven history, so I am confident there is no widespread quality issue with the seam tape used in the X-Mid Pro. While the X-Mid Pro is new, thus far we haven't seen any other issues like this. However individual quality issues can exist and for that we stand behind our tents. We apologize about this issue and will readily warranty an issue like this where the tape may have been misapplied.”

I like your up front, honest review. As one Thru hiker said to me once, spending $700.00 on rent for a 6 month hike, is actually a lot cheaper then renting an apartment for the same time frame. Skillet

Have my Pro2 and love it! Better than I could have imagined and surpassed all my expectations! It is so huge inside and so simple to set up with only 4 stakes needed.

I've had the X-Mid 2 regular for about 5 months now and my favorite thing hands down is the vestibule. The benefit of the offset pole placement is not just that it's out of the way of the door. It also means all your vestibule gear is near your head and easily reachable from the inner tent. This means you can store more things in the vestibule (like bug spray, etc.) and grab them super easily whether you're outside or inside the tent. It also keeps your inner less cluttered. Maybe there are other tents that accomplish this, but it's new to me and an awesome feature.

Congrats posting first Xmid-2 Pro video. Will be sure to press all the seam-tape before deploying for the first time.

I purchased the regular XMID 2P when it first came out - I was one of the lucky ones - and it still performs beautifully to this day. A really solid tent. Best tent I ever owned.

Sometimes it’s really hard to justify the expensive of going ultralite…….I lighten my load in many places but for 120 USD I use the Vango Orion 200 it is storm-proof and dependable in any conditions. I’d rather deal with the extra weight than these tents…….

looks like you could stake down the pivoted part of the vestibule on the outside at 4:56 so to speak in order to keep it in that position..?

This tent sold out much faster than that. I remember being online with CC already saved and the website started to crash a few minutes before release. Sat there for 2 hours clicking refresh until I was finally able to check out and then the confirmation system crashed after I paid. Then it was 7 months of waiting, but it finally arrived and it's everything I hoped it to be. No quality issues on my end and Dan was very responsive with all my questions with the shipment. Would I recommend waiting that long to receive a tent that is more or less the same as others in it's class, no. But it is certainly better than the others and if you're going to spend that much and can afford to wait for it, you might as well.

I used this tent on a 160 mile Collegiate Loop trip this summer and it was simply outstanding.

SPACIOUSNESS / SLEEPING ARRANGEMENT
A quick note on the spaciousness and sleeping arrangement of the X-Mid Pro 2. I think the X-Mid Pro 2 is more spacious that it appears in this video because here it is only shown with oversized (wide/long) pads, which changes the perspective. With regular sized pads that most people are used to seeing in a tent, there is a lot more extra width and length. The 48" floor width is quite normal or even generous for this niche, with main competitors like the Duplex and SS Li at 45", while name other tents are 50" tapering to 42", so they also are narrower. Yes having 50" would be nice, but it's already wider than it's main competitors.

With regard to the sleeping orientation, I also don't think this video gives the best perspective because the wide/long pads affect the perspective and because you don't have to sleep up in the two corner. Yes two of the corners are lower, but the idea is that you slide down to leave this lower corner as a place for gear which also puts the two occupants side by side. Someone at 6'0" should have about 1.5 feet of extra length and really doesn't need to slide their head way into this corner as it appears here. The idea is that the person with the lower corner at their head slides down to leave that as a space for gear, while the person with the lower corner at their feet slides up to again leave that as an area for gear. By sliding away from these lower corners, no one is cramped and both sleepers are side by side in a nice normal configuration. If one person is very tall (at least 6'4") so they do need to use more of the length, then we recommend they sleep on the side with more space at their head. Only if both people are very tall does it make sense to sleep opposite ways so that you can both have that extra headroom.

The length of the X-Mid Pro 2 fly is the same as the regular X-Mid 2 (both are 100") and with the regular X-Mid 2 about 95% of people sleep the same direction. So it is quite a bit more spacious on that side then it might appear here, and almost everyone finds it works well.

Thank you for being a logical person and constantly ranting about how tent manufacturers are being ridiculous and not giving us TWO more INCHES!!!! They litteraly just lost 300$+ in revenu because I will be getting the non-pro version that is slightly larger.

I've been looking at this a few days and really hope to get one next year. I'm to hike the Australia Alps Walking Track down in Australia in 2024 which a 650+kms track so having a tent like this would be

If you're looking to blow $700+ on a tent, I'd also suggest looking into Hilleberg. They're not ultralights (they're made for holding up against Swedish blizzards), but the quality is top-notch.

On the AT and LT I think the most popular tent is a Zapck Duplex. I also see a lot of Big Agnes of various models. I have actually never seen this tent anywhere. It looks nice and if I did not have a thing against Chinese knock offs I could support it. Zpacks all the way.

Congratulations on snagging a Pro2. Sorry about that seam tape. Hopefully it is a simple fix. Great video.

Yep…too swimsuit for me 😂. We recently received the X-mid 2 solid. Haven’t had it in a trip yet but tried it out in the backyard. So far we’re liking the interior space with 2 people and a 50lb dog. Yes snug but we can make it work. I too was confused about the magnet closure for the fly and the cord for the inner door. That needs an upgrade. Also found it easy super to pitch correctly the first time. So far everyone that’s seen it says it’s a weird looking tent but I’m loving it! I can see why it’s popular. Enjoying your channel. Always great stuff
