How The Election Will Affect Your Retirement

💲 NEED FINANCIAL ADVICE? 💲
1) Google "fee-only financial adviser" or visit www.NAPFA.org (largest association of fee-only financial advisers). NOT an affiliate link
2) The first question to ask any financial adviser is, "Are you a fiduciary to me 100% of the time". Get the answer in writing
3) Please note that some people call themselves "fee-based". This is NOT the same as fee-only. Fee-only advisers have committed to being fiduciary to you 100% of the time.
4) Personally, I would only hire an adviser who is a fiduciary to me 100% of the time. This is not a suggestion on what you should do. Just sharing my personal preference.

⚠️ Azul's "Scammer" Warning ➡ PLEASE READ! ⚠️
Be careful of scammers. In the comments section, I will NEVER ask you to contact me, offer any investment products, recommend a stock broker, or anything similar. Some scam bot commenters 'ask' for investment help, and later, other comment bots reply with "how great X idea/investment/person is" in the replies. These are scam threads. Do not fall for them.

🚨 Azul's VIDEOS ARE NOT FINANCIAL ADVICE (Disclaimer) 🚨

The decisions on how to invest, when to retire, and other financial planning topics are some of the most important financial decisions you will make in your life. I urge you to seek professional financial advice as you make this decision. Ideally, from a financial adviser, AND a CPA AND an attorney. Having the perspective of all three professions will help you make the right decision for you and your family.

This information is being presented without consideration of the investment objectives, risk tolerance, or financial circumstances of any specific investor and may NOT be suitable for all investors.

This information is NOT intended to, and should NOT, form a primary basis for any investment decision that you may make. Always consult your own legal, tax, and/or investment advisor before making any investment/tax/estate/financial planning considerations or decisions.

Spoiler Alert: There are no "get rich" programs. Rather, just basic blocking & tackling and putting in time and care. Do your homework, choose wisely and (IMHO) work with experienced professionals who are fiduciary to you 100% of the time.

I like the idea of trying to keep it non-political.

Folks heard this from another financial advisor. Start worrying about your own house and not the White House. Live life to the fullest. Retire sooner rather than later if possible. Enjoy the time you have because what's remaining is short.

I just turned 41 and awfully late to investing with barely any portfolio except my 401k, I have a decent amount of cash saved up and with inflation currently soaring AGAIN, I’m getting worried about retirement, my intention is to retire at 65 atleast, so how best do I maximize my savings of over $500k

The argument that the stock market performs better in the first year of a Republican president compared to a Democrat oversimplifies the complex dynamics of economic performance and policy impact. It's important to recognize that the economic conditions and market performance during the initial year of any presidency are significantly influenced by the policies and events from the preceding administration.

For example, Obama's early years were marked by efforts to recover from the Great Recession, a situation inherited from Bush's presidency. Similarly, Biden's first year reflected the challenges left by Trump's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and its economic fallout. On the other hand, Trump's initial market gains were a continuation of the economic recovery and growth trajectory established during Obama's tenure.

Attributing stock market performance solely to the party of the current president ignores the broader context of economic cycles, global events, and long-term policy impacts. A more nuanced view acknowledges that economic outcomes result from a combination of past policies, present actions, and external factors, rather than simply the party affiliation of the president in their first year.

So far I'm doing good, approaching retirement with about 800k in savings. Transitioning from building wealth to spending can be scary, especially with soaring inflation. My question is, after maxing out my tax-advantaged retirement accounts, what next?

Yikes - the Morgan Stanley table is just wrong, and you should have spotted this. The market fell 37% during Obama’s first term? That’s only true if one INCORRECTLY assigns 2008-2016 as his term. He took office in 2009. So I assume everything in the chart is off by one year. This can make a huge difference.

Thank you Azul, I appreciate the breakdown and the data you presented. I’m going to retire in the next year and this was a big question for me. I don’t feel so nervous now.

The avg. American is having a tough time, I know I am not alone. There are others in same position as me. By certain statistics: 22% of americans have no retirement savings. 64% are worried that they will not have money in latter years while 47% of adults who are not yet retired think they have to work part-time in retirement. How can I best grow the 100k I have saved seperately outside retirement access which of course had depleted over the years?

Presidential elections always affects the stock market. No matter who wins the election, the market goes up after an election due to less uncertainty. I suspect no matter who wins this November, the market will go up.

If you invest correctly and the market is heading up it doesn’t matter who’s running or elected
The market has a mind of its own

Fair and balanced. What I found most interesting was President with Congress controlled by the other party. In both cases you saw the lowest returns. It does “suggest” that investors get hurt the most in those scenarios.

Yes start early and hope for the best.

The market has done great the last 3.5 years. A divided executive branch and congress is best.

I retired in 2020 and have been screwed ever since. Inflation goes up at the beginning of the year but we retiree's do not get a bump in Social Security until the start of the new year.
