Can only imagine what these battles looked like in person.

A stirring commentary on a modest naval victory for England. Remind me what happened to the British navy one year later?

I want to show this video to students without ads, but when I make the link ad-free, it tells me it's unavailable. Is there something else I can do?

Sir Francis Drake was born around 1540, his death was 1598 (minor correction) :)

The British never admitted to defeat but was loved by privateers.

I guess Liz wasn't happy when Francis and his mate Norris lost her navy in the Corunna fiasco the following year.

Is super fun how British/American people always tell this story, but fail to mention that this was just a battle in a war that lasted for another 16 years and they ended up losing, badly... (a war in which actually they also lose they armada the next year yo that happening in an even more humiliation way than the Spanish...)

Elizabeth did not offer congratulations at Tilbury. She did not know the Armada was already defeated.

I'm pretty sure it's King 'Philip' II of Spain, with one 'L" not two...

To Philip who corrected his spelling of Philip; mate, ‘Phillip’ is commonly the spelling of the surname Phillip and 'Philip' for the first name but regardless, Phillip was the King of Spain so his name was Felipe —certainly not the English Philip🤣😂, considering he was at war against the power-hungry, immoral Queen of England🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Wow.
Spain was upset over English raids in the Americas and support for the Dutch.
But this was a religious war, and started not because of raids but the execution of Mary Queen of Scotland who was Catholic and granddaughter of Catherine of Aragon by Henry the eighth. Spain considered her the legitimate Queen of England
Spain wished to return England to the Catholic Church and place a Catholic on the throne
English ships did little damage to the Spanish ships, but the English were on the windward side. The Spanish simply could not turn around to fight them.
After the fireship attack the Spanish could only sail north into the storm that wrecked them
Three huzzahs for the English sailor, but as Elizabeth said
He(God) made the winds blow to scatter mine enemies’
The weather won not English Tars.
By the by gunpowder smoke of that time was white. Black smoke wouldn’t be seen until the late nineteenth century century
