Hello and welcome to Erin On the Side of Caution. In today’s video I am going to be talking about Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) what it is and what it claims to do. I’ll also talk about some commonly used techniques, if there is any evidence NLP actually works, the criticisms, and potential danger. I post weekly videos to raise awareness about the empty promises of the multi-level marketing and self-help industries. Don’t forget to subscribe and turn on the notification bell to never miss an update.

I’m so happy you talked about this! I’ve heard so much about NLP, but it always seemed a little sketchy since many people who push it are “life coaches” with very little training.

After watching a bunch of videos trying to figure out what exactly NLP is and how to use it, feeling like I was on a wild goose chase, I’m so glad to find this one. Thank you!!!! New subscriber.

I'm so ashamed of making deposit on NLP. I quickly asked for forgiveness and cancel my spot with them. Wasn't sure whether I'll be able to get back deposit. After making some research, and prayer, Holy Spirit gave me wisdom by knowing NLP treat techniques as a tool, but the Holy Spirit is alive, not a tool. The reason if you practice NLP, it's all about yourself and you'll blunt your relationship with the Holy Spirit, it's going to be hard to reconnect again

As a trainer of NLP by John Grinder, the description of NLP is not one that I recognise here and especially when you refer to ‘manipulation’. Manipulation of PROCESS is correct. Manipulation of CONTENT is the problem. For example, in this video alone, it could be classed a manipulation of content. In other words, you trying to get people to believe a certain way about a subject based upon your own beliefs about NLP. Manipulation of process is ‘content free’. I would give someone an exercise such as a NLP New Code Game and then let a person come to a conclusion based on their experiences. NLP can be put into 2 different categories: 1) Classic Code (1970’s) and 2) New Code (1980’s - present). Unless you’ve taken direct training from John or Richard or one of their trainers, you are talking about ‘classic code’. Some people still teach that today and although it is still powerful, what is quite right to say in this video, is it has its flaws. What John didn’t like was that NLP coaches were helping people but then the trainers lives weren’t very good, in other words, they were incongruent. Richard didn’t like when modelling geniuses, that you modelled the skills and limitations of the model. It was also limited to the fact that humans are neurologically capable of so much more states that we aren’t using. 97% of us feel 12 emotions during the year! So he created Design Human Engineering (DHE) and Neuro Hypnotic Repatterning (NHR) with John La Valle. John Grinder created NLP New Code with Carmen Bostic St Clair. With NLP New Code, you are changing ‘state’ which is a higher logical level than ‘behaviour’. If you are asking a client, “how would you like to feel instead?”, this is old NLP and will yield inconsistent results because the unconscious mind is not involved in the process at any stage. Both John and Richard now use CLEAN ‘unconscious signals’ for change work. This wasn’t present in Classic Code. We also operate ‘content free’ meaning that you can’t manipulate a person at that level. Regards to the science, yes that’s correct! The only way to do something science in this context is to have either a computer or tape recording to make it science. Like CBT computerised. But the problem with this is that 90% of people still have this problem after a year doing it this way. This is because you can have far more quality on one to one doing things in a person centred approach rather than giving people the same exact scientific methodology, even though I love my science. Science is for population, not individuals. And with humans, they only have certain things in common that you can measure across the board and it can be very misleading.

Fantastic overview. I joined a coaching program with NLP but withdrew soon after. I felt so uneasy but didn't know why. Now I know why. Thank you. Keep up the good work.

My only known experience of NLP was of a NLP-trained support worker who would enter the home whereupon the entire household would immediately become dysregulated. Something wasn’t right there. Hey, best to just communicate with integrity peeps 👍🏻

Very informative and well presented. I became interested in NLP in the 1990's when, as a trial lawyer, I was serving on a board of a family counseling service. Several of the counselors had been trained in NLP (and other therapy modalities) and explained the basics to me. I went on from there to read all available literature concerning the "science, " again, with a view of applying it to forensic trial advocacy. In the end, I found that there were a handful of techniques embraced by NLP "practitioners" --- but also by millions "untrained" human beings in day-to-day communication (all without knowing the labels and nomenclature) --- that were helpful in persuasive advocacy. The rest of it appeared to be pretentious nonsense, or skillsets that were impractical, unworkable or, as discussed in this video, unethical. All of these suspicions have been borne out by behavioral science.

The biggest and most damaging effect of the use of NLP on the population has been in its application with Common Purpose who use NLP methods to re-program people's perceptions. Common Purpose has been a standard training for so many organizations, including those of law enforcement, the areas of education and health, to promote the workforce adherence to desired directions, so that they will not think outside the box in a creative way!!

Great video, and awesome channel name! I've heard NLP described as counselling for those who don't need counselling..

Very interesting Video. I did a practitioner NLP training course many years ago. It costs about £2500. I received very little benefit from the training. I have noticed over the years that a lot of NLP trainers have jumped ship and are now involved in The Three Principles Psychology. Which kind of tells you all you need to know. I study the Three principles as well. A lot of Three Principles books are written by individuals with PhDs. . The problem with a lot of the NLP techniques is that they don't change the underlying issues. It has never been endorsed by the relevant authorities. This is what you stated yourself. Some of the stuff is useful, but I regret wasting the money.

I don't know exactly what the truth about NLP is, but the reason it interests me is because I do stongly believe that you can change the thought patterns in your head once you are aware of them. I don't know if NLP is the way to do this, but I strongly feel drawn to things like this, because I have a habit of negative thinking and falling into negative thought patterns and I think it must be possible to break trough. Also I do believe that you are capable of a lot more then you think. We are programmed to not have any dreams, it's better to have sheep then people who want to change the world. But look at all those people who did change the world a little. It's not that they were lucky, they had a vision and believed in it and fought for it.

NLP worked well for me to get me moving on from a traumatic situation where a psychologist at the time didn't. I had 2 years of NLP coaching and it allowed me to reboot myself. I can't say the same for other therapies. I think that you need to understand just as we are all very different, NLP may work for some like myself and for others it won't. It also depends on the person coaching you, and their background (just like a psych or a doc). The person, the approach and the modality are all so individual. It's not a one-size-fits-all world.

Hi, I believe my brother has been through this with a life coaching course and it has really messed him up. Any advice on what to do to get someone using this practice out of business? This was so educational and helpful. Thank you for making it

It's ironic (and sad) but the add I have on YouTube along with this video is about a sketchy "self-help class" :/
