Final Year Project on a Fish-Like Morphing Wing - Rui Wu

Morphing wing can improve aerodynamic efficiency and enlarge flight regime of aircraft. The presented research studied an innovative morphing airfoil concept, which is consisted of two components: The compliant truss structure that allows morphing with multiple degree-of-freedoms but possesses high stiffness when constrained by actuators; the actuation system with linear ultrasonic motor and compliant runners that can fully control the morphing structure. The video clip shows a morphing demonstrator driven by servos.
A discovery has been made from CFD analysis and wind tunnel tests: the ability to morph in different shape changing strategies (thanks to the multiple degree-of-freedoms) further enlarges flight regime, since the strategies outperform each other at different flight conditions. The diagram below shows aerodynamic efficiency across a wide lift regime. It can be seen that the efficiency in the high lift regime can be improved by adapting different morphing strategies. Meanwhile, the research also proved that the pitching moment could be controlled independently of lift in a similar way.

Very cool how you figured out how to bend the airfoil without ruining the aerodynamic aspects! Well done.

I guess YouTube just really wants me to understand that flexi wings are a thing

"Here's a video"
thank you..
"Wait, I found another one, same topic"
...thank you...?

As a hang glider pilot, I wanted to make sailboat main sails into double-surfaced morphing wings back in the mid 90's but no one listened. hehe

That is an extraordinary concept, I am curious in this could work with rigid materials for strength

The internals are cool, but how will you skin the bottom?

It'd be interesting to see the material you'd cover the wing in because currently its not possible to generate any lift. Great idea though.

Just asking, wouldn't it make more sense to actuate the top surface instead, because:

Aileron Up > Pulling motion > Reduce wing area + reduce camber = Working in unison to reduce lift
Aileron Down > Pushing motion > Increase wing area + increase camber = Working in unison to increase lift

Hey buddy, came across this recently. Would you be able to provide some more detain on how you got the hinge structure at the bottom to work and the type of material used for the bottom rods as well as the top of the wing? Cheers! :)

I like it, what kind of skin do you plan to put over that flexible structure?

fantastic.. I want to apply this mechanism to my newly built airplane model. I pursuit bird-like morphing fuselage and wings for maximum maneuability. WIll you help? Thanks
