We Almost Didn’t Make it Out Before the Cave Flash Flooded

Many lessons learned in this one..
We went down into a wet multidrop cave as a severe storm was approaching. We didn't realize just how close we were to getting flash flooded inside.

As a 25 year caving veteran of southern Kentucky and northern Tennessee caves, I can tell you that as much as I love these videos, this particular adventure was straight up reckless and courted death. In Fentress County, Tennessee in 1997 I should have lost my life in a virgin, water active cave with spectacular waterfalls and a low, partially water filled 1600' entrance belly crawl. My best caving friend Vic and I were invited to check out this promising lead on a very hot, sunny August day with no rain in the forecast. We struggled up the watery elliptical crawl and emerged into a series of water active low rooms. The way ahead was grim, and anticipating a turn around, Vic decided to leave his cave pack behind--this is what saved our lives. Twenty minutes later, we had broken out into a fairly large room with a waterfall, a very high canyon led off to the side. The cave was opening up! And normally we would have pushed; but Vic had left his pack behind, so with a break we began the long crawl back. Nearing the entrance we could hear very low bass rumbles, which frighteningly sounded like huge boulders falling in the distance....it was actually heavy thunder, and we emerged into a hyper violent thunderstorm, which dumped several inches of rain and placed the entire county on emergency flood alert. Had Vic not left his pack behind we would have drowned. Two weeks later Vic and I returned to the canyon and could plainly see the flood line 12' above our heads!

When she said the drop is normally dry and it was wet… that was a sign

Going into a flooded cave with a high likelihood of a flashflood from a tornado is straight-up reckless.

so, there supposed to be no water, there is a storm watch. and you guys still think its a good idea to go cave diving without scuba gear.

First sign you were getting ready to make a very risky move, it's a wet/stream cave and there's an inbound storm. Second sign was when she said the first part is usually dry. Third sign was the fact the water wasn't clear. I used to do a lot of caving and was even certified in cave rescue. That was a pretty dumb move bro, imo. Drowning wouldn't have been your biggest problem, Hypothermia would have been, right after you got trapped in between a waterfall and a flooded low crawl. The MOST reckless thing about this is I bet you KNOW all of this. The idea is to minimize risk, not expand upon it. But hey, had you gotten trapped, imagine the 'clicks and views' huh...
My review- Would not recommend, especially to the inexperienced.

Seven things I have learned about caving from these videos:
1. Don't forget your wet suit
2. Bring extra knee pads for your friends
3. Don't break the straws
4. You never say the L word.
5. Don't jump into Toxic waste water even if someone gives you $100.
6. Two inches of rain takes you within an inch of losing your life.
7. Stay safe !

they should make a horror movie about people going into flooding caves

Im gonna stop watching if you guys continue to ignore extra danger.. Even without the extra risks its dangerous enough.

I like to believe that Husky was a guardian angel trying to tell you guys not to go in there.🙏

This is something I know I could never do. But I thank y'all for doing it and showing us the beauty of these caves. Glad everyone got through okay.

This was insanely stupid, I don't care how good you think you are.

After observing such reckless disregard for the heavy, clearly present water flow, while knowing a storm guaranteed to exacerbate the already visible and potentially deadly situation before you even entered what easily could have become your tomb, I genuinely question the intellectual capacities of all of you. Especially after watching the hasty, careless, and amateur usage of climbing gear that lacked any redundant safety measures, which not only unnecessarily risked your own lives but potentially those of any rescuers who might have been tasked with saving or recovering one or more of you. Obviously "common sense" is Not common.

Yo im new here and enjoy your content!! Caving alone is dangerous but adding the rain i feel like you're taking unnecessary risk that could cost you your life please use your common senses and realize your lives are so much more important than the content!! Mad respect just be careful

Ah the age ol’ question of “if your friends jumped off a cliff, would you?”

Great content as usual, but please don't make a habit of racing the rain, mother nature has been in this game longer than any of us, and she always wins in the end. Stay safe dude!

Crazy going into a cave with that much rain forecast....Read about Mossdale Cavern disaster. Happens quicker than you think. Otherwise, what an awesome little through trip. Imagine doing it in reverse!

I think that dog was trying to warn you to not go in.🤔😳🐾

Glad you made it out. I almost died during this thing called Mouser Week, it was like an award ceremony/party underground in a tunnel. Middle of winter in Minnesota, frigid cold. We had to take a raft into the tunnel. The one me and 2 other people were on was called "the Widow-maker"... and it broke in half towards the end of the tunnel and we fell in frigid water up to our chest. I grabbed one of the people i was with and helped drag her to shore. Our hip waders were filled with water and we couldn't pull ourselves out. Luckily people were on shore and helped us out and pushed us up the hill. We we struggling to get the boots off and we couldn't walk. After a lot more struggling we managed to take them off and make it to the car. We all had frostbite, hypothermia, and could hardly move. That was the last time I did something really stupid.
