The daughter of Donald Campbell has laid flowers on Coniston Water to mark the 50th anniversary of his death.

Campbell was killed after his jet-powered boat Bluebird flipped over and disintegrated as he tried to set a new water-speed record.

I remember listening to this live with my mum on her red bakalite radio. I was 7 years old. The following year was the Aberfan disaster. The kids were my age. It still haunts me.

A true speed king who pushed the limits beyond all we could imagine, true british legend may he still be braking speed records up in heaven

How on earth did it take 34 years to recover him. It's like 80 feet off the shore of a lake, not in the middle of the English Channel for God sakes.

Those were the days when we still had national heroes to be proud of and Donald Campbell was one of them. A very courageous Brit.

If only Donald had stopped to be refuelled and had waited for the waves from his first run to dissipate

He may have done it, but thinking to himself
he had enough fuel to make a second run and fuels weight
He went for it...
Yes, he could have waited until the water was calm again.
It was all or nothing ...
Donald Campbell was tragically killed, but he was one of the bravest man Britain has ever known.

There will never be speed King like him again.

The Bluebird k7 needs to return to the Ruskin museum in Coniston to be with the skipper who is buried nearby.
