When Do You Get An Indirect Freekick?

Not so long ago when Chelsea visited Selhurst Park stadium where an event occurred that challenged everyone's knowledge of football rules. The first half of the game ended all square as two goals were shared by both teams. Chelsea had a chance to take the lead in the first half, but their hopes were dashed when the referee gave an indirect free-kick instead of a penalty kick after a handball inside the 18-yard box. As a result, the Blues were unable to capitalize on the opportunity and win the half.

Fans around the world were left scratching their heads, wondering if the referee was making up new rules on the spot. Was this some backroom football trickery or just some outdated schoolbook stuff? And what's the deal with this 'indirect free-kick’ anyway?

So, just to add to the enigma of indirect free-kicks, we thought we'd share a little nugget of knowledge with you.

Much more than what this video claims. It left out extremely much. And indirect free kicks occur anywhere on the field. The most usual one is an offside. This video only shows penalty area indirect free kicks and doesn't explain when you get an indirect free kick. There many more ways to get an indirect free kick.

Every offside is an indirect free kick.
Any time a referee calls simulation.
Every dangerous play without contact.
Every protest during play if the referee calls it.
Every back pass picked up by the GK in the penalty area.
Any trickery used to make a back pass.
Any time a referee calls for the 6-second rule.
Any time a person from a team makes an offence towards a teammate outside the field of play.
Impeding an opponent without contact.
Preventing a goalkeeper from releasing the ball (without contact).
Playing the ball a second time after restarting play.
Goalkeeper picking up the ball after already having released it to the ground.
A player leaving the field of play without permission.
Being closer than 1 yard/meter from a wall when a teammates free kick is kicked.

I love that you don’t explain at all the key point of the whole video- why was Chelsea given an indirect free kick for a handball in the area instead of a pen? Real quality work here…

I think the rules of football are unesiseraly complicated. It makes me wonder why the rules aren't changed to make the rules simpler and easier for the armchair fan to understand.
