The Purdue cannon bowl started bc some Purdue fans tried to bring a cannon to a Illinois game in 1905 but Illinois figured it out and took before they could shoot it off, the barn the cannon was being held in caught on fire and rusted the cannon a bit so they turned it into a trophy for when the two teams started playing again in 1943

Illinois fans found and took it and the cannon was presented to the winner in 1943 for the first time. The cannon was last fired in 1983
