That swallow at the end… yeah. You’ve got a *BIG* job ahead of you girl. These kids have been failed *EVERY* step of the way. There’s a lot of making up to do, in such a short period of time.

It's pretty true to life. I taught high school, and it was rough. No one thought a white teacher knew anything. I learned a lot that first year, and fast forward 16 years and I am now teaching parolees.
The only difference between a kid who thinks he has to die for his own to earn respect is that the parolee knows that's bulls$1+. The parolee knows about death and family, and most of them have escaped death themselves and sat helpless when their parents were buried back home. They didn't get to raise their kids. Many of their family members don't trust them, and almost every single one of them say they wish they'd paid more attention in school and worried less about what was going on in the neighborhood. Many of them feel their lives are over, but it's my job to get them motivated and help them realize that their lives have just begun.

I've always treated respect on a sliding scale. People start up a ways, how I'm treated and the actions I see determine if the scale slides up further or goes down.

I believe everyone deserves to be treated with respect until they give you a reason not to.

You want respect, you must earn it. Prove you deserve it. 😮

You respect humans as humans, and you respect teachers as someone who has paid money & time to learn a skill. But you don't automatically assume that gives the teacher the right to dismiss or gainsay you about things the teacher has less experience in. Ava and the other kids are expecting the respect that should be freely given to all humans for being human. The teacher is expecting the respect given to a leader, which is something earned.

I like this movie and the way it was made... It's basically teaching a bunch of black kids about the struggles of European Jews.. How about survival of the transatlantic trade.. Wouldn't that be more relatable?

Do people really deserve respect without first listening to what a person has to say.
Respect is given but can be lost. Trust is earned
not just given. That can also be lost.
No one deserves either when they have a bad attitude and a narrow mindset.

This is one of those definition of respect things that I think the teacher hasn't ever heard before. Imagine a middle-aged, wealthy, white dude talking to anyone he considers 'less When he says 'if you respect me', he means 'treat me as an authority' or 'treat me like I'm superior to you'. Then when he says 'I'll respect you', he means 'I'll treat you with basic human dignity' or 'I'll treat you like a person instead of a nonentity, just not a very important person'.

If you NEED respect from others, you are lacking in self-respect. It's not either/ or, but you can exert influence over self-respect. Self-respect derives from doing respectable things.

How do they expect others to give them respect if they aren't willing to do the same?
