Welcome to our YouTube Channel for teachers, parents and kids! Today we read a book about maps. This book is part of "The Cat in the Hat's Learning Library" collection. The book was written by Tish Rabe and illustrated by Aristideas Ruiz. This copy was published by Random House in 2002.

Today's world is very digital with GPS and Google Maps; giving us step by step directions to our destination. Even though this book paper maps throughout the book, kids are fascinated to learn and play with real maps. The book offers wonderful and historical context of maps.

- Use a ripe orange to peal the skin off to show that a flat map idea from the book.
- Explain the "Never Eat Soggy Wheat" is a way to remember the what a compass rose looks like. Kids might want to create their own fun acronym.
- Find a map and use the legend to find the items on a map. Treat it as kind of an ISpy game.
- Help a child to understand the straight road vs' a twisty road using the string example from the reading (pg. 31 - 32).
- Make a grid game. Using a sheet of paper make a simple grid (as seen on pg. 35). Place items of interest on spots on the grid. Ask the child to find the spot of said object using the grid.
