By major language, you mean most spoken language, then yes Hindi is the most spoken language in India. But if you are talking about National language. It's little complicated here in India. There are 2 official languages that central government uses which is Hindi and English and the constitution also recognizes 22 languages nationally. Then there are languages that are official only in their respective state, district or territory but not recognised by the Indian constitution as a national language. Bengali is also one of the 22 languages recognised by the Indian constitution.
