Jayson Tatum made the All-NBA Third Team and was named and All-Star in 2020. He was 15th in the league in scoring, averaging 23.4 points per game. This video is very simple: the Boston Celtics gain a great advantage with the use of “The Gortat.” It’s a seal made famous by the man they call “The Polish Hammer” - Marcin Gortat made a living on rim runs and strong seals, first in Orlando, then in Phoenix, then in Washington. His seals saw his sizable openings for his guards to get right to the basket. The Golden State Warriors did this quite a bit during the NBA Finals, showcasing the value of this seal on the game’s grandest stage. Daniel Theis is probably the best at this in the league, and Tatum tends to be the benefit from this the best.

Basically Boston loves having Theis either set the screen or slip it. When Tatum handles, he snakes the ball screen whenever he can. If he can get his defender in jail, it’s effectively an uncontested rack attack. However (comma) this video isn’t all about Theis. It’s about Tatum benefitting from Boston’s bigs setting “The Gortat” seals.

“I get a lot of buckets off Theis setting screens and sealing and stuff like that,” Tatum said. “I always make sure I say thank you.”
