There was something bitter sweet in Nicola Sturgeon's evidence to a committee of the Scottish parliament about her row with her predecessor as First Minister, Alex Salmond.

The latest bout in a feud for the ages.

She may well have been fighting for her political survival and indeed she talked of standing up to a powerful man over serious complaints made by women about his behaviour.

But she said in her younger days she had looked up to him and revered him and talked of the time they were "besties".

It was she said, absurd to think she was out to get him.
