In belt drive, you need two extra parts (belt and pulley). Removing them is just a cost cutting. All top brands like IFB, Bosch, Miele, Samsung, Siemens, etc use belt drive. In direct drive, if any one of the component fails entire assembly is to be changed whose cost is to be beared by the customer. Also, due to belt, sudden load/jerk isn't directly transferred which keeps components safe.
