LrC can write XMPs automatically if you tell it to. And you really should if you don't want to lose your work when your catalog gets corrupted. It's a single checkbox in the catalog settings.

There are a couple od advantages to Classic that I find to be important. Classic has "color label", this helps with precise organization (for my workflow). Another is the "people" mask, CC has only subject and doesn't isolate people and people's features (hair, skin, etc.). This reduces the need to go to photoshop (sometimes).

If you want to edit across both apps but don’t want to upload the full photos into Adobe Cloud there is an easier option which is to import in Lightroom Classic and add to a cloud synced collection - the collection will be available as an Album in Lightroom and only the smart preview will be synced to the cloud enabling full editing even in Lightroom no need to mess around with XMP’s (although you can enable them if you want as per other comments it means one less issue if any problems with your catalog).

@0:24 The correct caption should be: What did Dunna do when Dunna did it?

My workflow starts by adding the photos into Lightroom on the desktop, this uploads them all to the cloud so they are safe. I then open Lightroom classic, this sync’s with the cloud and my photos are available. I use classic to edit them. At this point it’s all synced with LR LRC and LR mobile. 🎉

The easier way is to just use cloud sync in both, but MAKE SURE in LrC that you have it sort by date folders. If you have file names that are the same it will merge them if it's not putting them into date folders.

My workflow now is to ingest in Lr Desktop so it uploads the RAWs to the cloud and then work in LrC because the performance is way better and there are still features I prefer in LrC. It also syncs your changes back and forth.

Great vid! Have been using both LRC and LR for many years now, but especially after the Creative Clouds based file system was abandoned it was time for me to review and change the Workflow, the organization of files and folders and even my hardware (local vs cloud vs external ssd for traveling etc.). I understand what direction Adobe is going into with cloud based platforms but in my humble opinion file/folder organization and workflow does not seem to be a priority on top of their list. Both in terms of structure and training. Anyway, thanks very much for the input, gives me a good feel for what direction I should pursue.

Lightroom has Versions, which is the closest analogue to Classic’s virtual copies, and it rocks because they sync across all devices. With that said, Versions only works with Cloud-synced photos, not Local photos.

Right now my workflow is Lightroom Mobile on my iPhone/iPad during or right after the shoot (I love to edit a few key images and show my models or clients while they’re still there.) And then use cloud sync to migrate them into my desktop computers massive SSD storage for long term storage or mainly to Print, which doesn’t exist in Lightroom Mobile.

Since I don’t shoot weddings anymore, I typically only end up with a few dozen images these days. Maybe like 100-200 if I’m doing a studio or car shoot. Street and casual portraits are usually just one or two snaps. If I ever started working professionally again I would absolutely have to buy a Macbook Pro and only use Lightroom Classic, for sure. It’s just far too many images to batch edit them on a touch screen, I would need Classic. Right now, my iPhone Pro and my iPad Pro might even be overkill for casual shooting, but hey I already own them.

So Lightroom doesn't have a catalog, it works with images directly on the disk. Edits are saved to XMP files? So, like Lightroom Classic, no changes are made to the original file? Does that mean you have to export the edited photo like you do in Classic?

The tools are similar, but management of the file structures can be a nightmare! There needs to be a course, YouTube video, or book that very carefully explains how to work in BOTH environments.

Flags are now included in the XMP file and transfers between LR and LrC... They are slowly chipping away the little things not in LR.

i use classic for long - professional works, and the mobile only for mobile shoots, but now the question:

How to keep both presets sycn?

btw, precise content, im subscribed! keep it clear and fast, appreciate this !

Your presentation is alright, it’s clear, but these might as well be two different softwares. I’m interested in LRC because of the catalog structure and I’m interested in LR for remote adjustments, which are importable to LRC, as well as a library of “best” photos in the cloud that are accessible anywhere. This is way too much workaround. Adobe needs to integrate one product, which has the latest tools from PS, and allows an import to cloud storage for access and adjustments. I’ll look elsewhere thank you! Geoff

Great video man! But, can I just say: The very idea that we need to do this is absolutely insane. What was Adobe thinking, making this so damn difficult?! I am a classic user 95% of the time. But at times, it is useful for me to jump on my mobile in the field to do a quick edit and send to a client, or for social posting. The very idea that my presets are not synced between classic and the cloud is just ridiculous... I create my presets in classic. There is a way to export them but it is way too involved. Adobe needs to do better, especially for what they charge. Unrelated: I say that as a previous avid user of Premiere Pro that is testing the waters of Resolve. It is a pretty clear choice. Everything is so much simpler on Resolve. And color grading is years ahead of PP.

I almost switched back to lightroom fully but everytime i edit something in lightroom and think it looks ok I then look at the capture one version and the difference is just crazy in quality so I have deleted lightroom completely and fully committing to capture one. The denoise feature is fantastic but i can still throw the images through camera raw and denoise then import the DNG files into my capture one session. Best of both worlds with that way of doing it.

I wish folder architecture was better between the two

Honestly I use Lightroom CC on my Mac and when I carry my tablet around I use only Lightroom and I don't move the photos between them...too complicated. Ones I finish the edit I export the final photos in the same folder if they are part of the same project.

How the hell did you get your finder icons to be different like that?

Lightroom has Versions for photos. It's not the same as virtual copy?
