Wait until demand for a genre is at an all-time low before subverting it. This movie is fun because the conventions of Dashiell Hammett reached their apotheosis in 'China Town' and were thoroughly abstracted into standardized police procedures like 'Law and Order'. So it was good for 'Brick' to inject humor and personality back into a parody of the genre. 😅
