It appears that only one car can top the Mercedes-AMG One's Nürburgring lap record, and that car is—unsurprisingly—another AMG One. The previous record, set on October 28, 2022, by Mercedes-AMG brand ambassador Maro Engel, has been surpassed. Engel himself improved the time by several seconds.

On September 23, 2024, the DTM driver completed the lap in an astonishing 6 minutes and 29.09 seconds. This marks a significant improvement over the previous 6 minutes and 35.18 seconds. For clarification, this refers to the longer 12.92-mile (20.83-kilometer) version of the Nürburgring, commonly known as the Green Hell. The AMG One now holds the distinction of being the first street-legal production car to go under the 6:30 mark.

Mercedes hasn't provided a lap time for the shorter 12.8-mile (20.6-kilometer) layout, but Engel’s 2022 hot lap was clocked at 6 minutes and 30.7 seconds. The decision to take another shot at the record stemmed from Mercedes knowing there was room for improvement. During the previous record attempt, parts of the track were damp, making conditions less than ideal.

This time, AMG obliterated its own record during Maro Engel's third timed lap on a dry Nordschleife. The temperature was 68°F (20°C) on the asphalt and 59°F (15°C) in the air—perfect conditions for breaking the record. The AMG One crossed the finish line at 6:56 PM, setting a new standard.

Few cars could challenge the AMG One's reign at the Nürburgring. The Aston Martin Valkyrie is one potential rival, along with the upcoming McLaren W1. Another possibility is the successor to the LaFerrari. However, we can exclude the Red Bull RB17 as it’s a track-only vehicle, and the Lotus Evija X, despite its impressive 6:24 lap time, also falls into that category.

The rise of electric hypercars might introduce new challengers, but given the length of the Nürburgring, it's uncertain. Perhaps Rimac’s new Nevera R could be a contender. Porsche has also hinted at tackling the ‘Ring with the Mission X, but a production version has yet to be confirmed.

It seems unlikely that any car will beat the overall record set by the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo. In 2018, Timo Bernhard completed a lap in an astonishing 5 minutes and 19.5 seconds. An honorable mention goes to the electric Volkswagen ID.R, which managed a 6:05 lap in 2019.

So why is a hyper car driving on this track. Every one knows that electric cars have a faster speed than gas powered cars. This is not a fair speed race. And is a joke. No gas only powered car can beat this record at this time.
