The Canon EOS 3000, the entry-level SLR from the early 2000s and the point where Canon got the format right. This is a brilliant SLR with an EF mount that offers up everything a photographer looking to get into 35mm can want, with full metered manual, semi-automatic and auto exposure. Plus a vast catalogue of excellent optics to back this simple body up!

I am an unabashed Canon EOS fanboy. That 40mm f2.8 pancake is my go-to lens. I use my 50mm f1.4 lens for night shots and the 85mm f1.8 for portraits. I’ve got the 100mm f2.8 lens I use every once in awhile for macro, but it’s bulky and I never really feel like lugging it around, except if I’m shooting floral stuff.

Well said! I love my EOS camera. It's my lightest camera, there's a built-in light meter, there's auto focus, and all I have to do is compose and choose the aperture when shooting in aperture priority mode. It's also great to use in the winter. My Pentax Spotmatic freezes up in sub-zero temperatures, but my Canon Rebel G functions without issue (although the batteries drain more quickly).

It's so light with the plastic version of the 50mm f1.8. i really wish it had a split focus screen in the viewfinder though so I feel confident on nailing focus on my manual lenses. Each shot feels too precious now with film so to confirm focus with the viewfinder split focus aid I dont have the confidence. I wonder of you can modify it so you can change the viewfinder screen in the eos 3000?

That camera looks like a nice kit for a newbie. One entry-level setup that I found at a thrift store was a Minolta Maxxum 3000i. It only has two shooting modes, Program and High Speed. It's pretty much an interchangeable lens point and shoot. The main reason I got it was that it came with an AF 50mm f1.7.

My first EOS camera was the 650. I no longer have that camera and moved on through several of the mirrorless cameras and now have a 6DMKII and the EOS R. I did get another Canon film camera and now have a EOS-1N RS. It is a nice shooter but it is big and heavy as it needs at least 50 AA batteries to run. Still it is a great camera and all of the EF glass works on it. Love it

For versatility I'd get the 100mm macro. At least, that's what I did. It's great for macro obviously, but it makes for a fine portrait lens as well. I think the 100mm is a bit more common on the secondhand market, which might make it more easy to find. The 85mm is also said to be terrific but I have no experience with it. Yes the 100mm is a bit bulky, but that doesn't bother me at all!

I really like my Canon 1000FN, I got it as my first camera and it was excellent choice I paired it with sigma 28-80 and 50mm f1.8 and I had great experience shooting with it. Recently I bought Canon 10QD from Japan and I really like the extra functions. I've been shooting for about a year and half, started with film and then digital, the film learned me to think about each photo I take.

Is the 3000 better or worse that the rebel xs? I feel like one is lighter but for the most part I can’t see a physical difference I love my canon eos rebel xs but it’s a couple years older than the 3000 I just acquired. Could you share some differences?

I shoot Canon and have for years. I already own a 5D mk IV DSLR and an EOS 3 film body. I have just picked up an old EOS 500N (UK name) for £20 on eBay plus a 28-80 version 3 for £30. I think I got a good buy and now have 3 bodies that can share my already small collection of EF lenses (some of which are L lenses).
