The irony is one of the most famous jokes of all ("Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side!" ) is an anti-joke, & actually becomes funny when you realise that.

There is an art to anti-jokes: they usually require a set-up where one would expect a pun or play on words. The best actively deny them. One of my favourites is this one:

"I can still remember my Grandpa's last words before he kicked the bucket.

He said, "Hey, how far do you think I can kick this bucket?""

The whale joke is funny because you expect some cheesy one-liner, but then it just suddenly stops short.
