• What is a stye and why does it occur?
A stye, referred to as a hordeolum in medical terms, is a bacterial infection of one of the glands in the eye lids. There are 2 types of glands located in the eyelids: meibomian glands, glands of Zeis and Moll. There are normal bacteria that live on the surface of our eyelids and if some of that bacteria gets trapped inside these glands then it will sometimes cause the gland to become infected, resulting in a stye.

• What are typical symptoms that occur with a stye?
When you develop a stye you will get the tell-tale signs of infection: a red, swollen, tender and inflamed eyelid.

• Why would a warm compress help treat styes?
Most styes are self-limiting, which means that your body’s immune system is good at fighting off and dealing with this infection. Resolution of a stye often occurs in 7-14 days. There are some things that can sometimes help to resolve a stye faster. Hot compresses can be used for 10minutes 2-4 times per day can sometimes be helpful. This heat will increase the blood flood and circulation around the eye lids, which brings more immune factors to that area to help fight off the infection. Keep in mind this heat will cause the area to be more swollen. Other treatments include antibiotics: eye drops and ointments can be tried but they often don’t penetrate the skin very deep so it may not get to the active infection. Oral (pills) antibiotics are usually more effective at treating styes but one should have a conversation with their eye doctor about the benefits of this. Eyelid hygiene and cleaning can also helpful in preventing styes and sometimes in treating a stye. Ask your eye doctor on which eyelid cleaning product would be recommended.

Hands down THE BEST VIDEO I've seen regarding the eye issues. I just learned I have a Chalazion. I've learned more from this 12 minute video than I have from the Optometrist I saw! THANK YOU SO MUCH! Just subscribed 😃👍👀

I boil an egg. Get it real hot, wrap it in a paper towel and lay it on my eye. Fits perfectly and matches the shape of your eye socket. Also keeps the heat for way longer than a wash cloth or something like that

As a healthcare worker, I just want to say I love your bedside manner so much and there are so many healthcare workers who could learn so much from the way you educate.

Quite simply the best video on all things stye related. I’ve been suffering with these for 10 years on and off. Good advice here, stick with this and don’t bother watching any other stye videos.

I had a stye which seemed to be healing. I thought I would place a warm compress to speed up the healing and some light eyelid massage. The next day my lid swelling up so much I couldn't barely open it up. The pain which was initially localized had spread well my entire lid and beyond. I couldn't even get out of bed. I finally got myself to a doctor who prescribed antibiotics and eyedrops. I just have to say I have never felt so much pain in my eyelid as this experience.

THIS!! I have gone through SEVERAL videos on the net, but THIS is THE ONE I NEEDED. You explained the situation so well! Now I fully understand the difference between a stye and a chalazion. This means I have a healing stye on my right eye and a chalazion on my left which is gradually reducing in size. Thank you so much for this video! Better than my doctor for sure

I’m 5 days with stye (hordeolum) on my right lower eyelid. It got swollen and red after pool water got inside it. been using breastmilk as eye drops twice a day, cleaning my eyes with liquid baby soap/shampoo every time it’s itchy or clumpy. It popped yesterday after I applied warm compress of boiled egg wrapped in a tissue. Now the pus is draining, with blood sometimes. And I’m sensitive to the light of big screen of TV, not to my phone screen though thank God. But it’s not as tender, sore and warm as before since the pus is already draining out. I hope to God it will go away already because of its discomfort. I did not take any pain reliever tho. Just probiotics supplements and Vitamin C. I bought over the counter eye drops for red and irritated eyes but I think it doesn’t really work unlike the breastmilk, so I stashed it away.

I also sleep a lot since I limit myself to screen time. It’s just so annoying to wake up with crusty eyes from the dried pus. I wash my eyes and face with warm water and liquid baby soap/shampoo. I also avoid meat now because it can worsen my inflammation. I drink turmeric latte twice a day for its anti-inflammatory properties.

I may be low on vitamin A so I should have that pumpkin soup I’ve been wanting to have. Also need to eat carrots. After all vitamin A and beta carotene are good for the eyes.

7 days update: the pus is all gone and it’s not tender anymore. It is healing and I stopped putting breastmilk and boiled egg warm compress on it. I just blink when it gets itchy at times and try my best not to rub it as I’m afraid I might touch it with dirty hands. That’s why I’ve been washing my hands constantly, clean freaking. I’m also back to my skincare routine as I have stopped when my stye was really swelling. I am incorporating aloe vera for its antibacterial and wound healing properties. I massage it around my eyelids.

more things I learned
- eye lid massage by Dr. EyeGuy
- dry eyes moisturizing eye drops to help with the drainage of the debris by Dr. Noonci
- if you have diabetes and high cholesterol, more chance of getting stye
- adults are also more prone to styes because they have more oil in their glands
- IPL is the fastest way to get rid of styes by Eye School with Dr. D
- take Zinc vitamins to boost immune system

Thank you so much for being so very thorough! This has been the best video I’ve seen thus far. I was told I have a chalazion, but this is quite painful and its definitely not hard. And it’s just now coming to a head 7 days in. I’m going to see an ophthalmologist after seeing this video.
