HOMESCHOOL Science PLANS for Next Year // 2023-2024 // 5th and 7th grade

Help me brainstorm ideas for science in the upcoming school year!

Are you looking for guidance and ideas for science curricula? I am… probably NOT the one to ask 😂

This has been the hardest subject by far for me to plan out for next year. We have always used, and loved, Real Science Odyssey from Pandia Press. However, my current 4th and 6th graders have used pretty much everything they have on offer and need to figure out what else is actually out there! Hint: It’s a LOT.

I’m chatting (very informally… in my truck… at soccer practice) about some of the potential options we have looked into for science courses as they move into 5th and 7th grades, including an idea that isn’t even science at all. This is definitely not a plan that is set in stone by any means.

I hope you find this helpful! If you did, you know what to do 👍🏻

We are using RSO Biology 2 this year for 7th grade. Can’t wait to see your review.

My son is doing Science Mom Biology and it is FANTASTIC. I have a biology degree and am so dang impressed with what she is teaching middle school kids. I swear I didn't learn most of it until HS, BUT she presents it in such a great way it is easy for students at middle school age to understand. My son does it completely independently which makes it easier for me. It comes with printable student pages and I have added in a few books to go with it. Highly highly recommend. We did science mom earth science last year and my son enjoyed it, but biology is even better

I know what you mean about the preteen attitude. Mine "already know everything " lol

I don’t know why, but you and truck chats are my favorites 😂❤

I chose Oak Meadow for science for my 6th grader next year, for the first time. So curious how it will work for him. I have looked into the history compass as well, and I’m excited of using it, just not sure when😅.

Have you looked into Elemental Science? I used it for both my 1st and 5th grader this year (they use a 4 year cycle and I combined them both for biology this year and just adjusted for each kid's ability). I know they have up to 8th and I believe they have high school levels as well but I'm not 100% sure.

We did (are still doing) the Oak Meadow 5th grade and while it is writing heavy I let my son get creative with his writing. He will draw and label often because he doesn’t like writing either. I also allow him to make comics for his writing. We also will discuss his answers versus having him write them. Hope that helps if you’re still considering it.

My 5th grader will be doing Science Mom's chemistry course. My 8th grader will be completing the second half of the Conceptual Integrated Science Explorations textbook & guided reading book (she's doing the first half this year). Both are completely secular (not neutral).

We're doing elevate science this year and honestly don't like it that much. The online is so confusing and not that great tbh. I hope you have a better experience if you use it.

For my 5th grader we will be doing Microbiology by SEA. My son had specifically requested microbiology so it was kinda perfect. It won't take the whole year though so I'm still figuring that out.

The new course from Pandia press does look good! What a good idea to do that for her.

Yeah I have no idea what we’re doing for science next year. My upcoming 9th grader wants to do astronomy and watt science while my upcoming 6th grader wants to a variety of topics, but no idea what we’re doing specifically for that. It’s also one we wouldn’t be able to do together because of their different levels.

I was looking into elevate science too and thought the same thing about the busy pages-it seemed a bit distracting!

We are using Oak Meadow I think…. 😬

OM5 for my 5th grader and OM3 for my 3rd grader.

A few other options are combining them for SCI level 3 Or having my 5th grader do FLVS grade 5 science. However, I’m 90% sure we will be doing Oak Meadow.

Have you looked into Microbiology for Kids? Would that be too young for her? Or one of the Secular, Eclectic, Academic online classes?

Great video! We have been looking at Oak Meadow as well. I bought the grade 5 science book and teacher's guide to try for 4th grade. Is there any reason your daughter can't just do BYL8 history of science this year since you're considering doing something different this year?
