I don’t understand why they had to change the characters. For example, originally, Olive was 7 and wore the metal shoes not to float away, while the protagonist’s love interest was a fire user.

I hate how much the movie changed from the books. Originally Emma had the fire hands, and Olive could float. In the books Enoch wasn't 16-17, he was 12-13. Millard's personality was WAY different in the books than this movie. In the books Millard literally said "Will you quit shouting and let me bleed in peace!"
Nonetheless, if you've never read the books or are able to ignore the changes, it's a pretty good movie
