How often should you change your irons? The draw of new golf equipment can be tempting, but how long do your irons actually last before you need to start thinking about replacing them?

It's a question equipment editor Hannah Holden gets asked a lot so she's has dug out the facts to set the record straight.

How often do you change your clubs? Leave us a comment to let us know.

Just bought a set of Ben Hogan Apex Plus irons from them. Never seen a drop off in performance. Keep grips changed and iron set can be played for a number of years! Strike and short game is everything.

A lot of golfers make the mistake of having a consistent strike point on the face. As I never know where on the face I will strike the ball, my irons will last a lot longer 😀

I change my grips every year but I love my irons that I got in 2015. Play 4 times a week, almost year round.

I'm playing ping Zing irons from 1991. They were given to me so they got me through my first couple years of golf but I'm going to get fitted in two weeks. I'm really excited

300 rounds before I need to change my irons. Ok I play 10 times a year, so I'm good for 30 years :)

I just upgraded my irons this summer for the first time in over a decade. I had no idea how much distance I had lost, I gained 2 clubs in all distances. Truly amazing!! I see how every 4-5 years is a better timeline for the next set!

Your passion for golf shows NCG. I vote for taking those 3 Purdy Ts flashed in this vid out to the course. Let's see how they perform. Thank you, you're very forthright

Isn’t it a case of wanting to change clubs rather than needing to change them, at least for 99.9% of golfers? Any tail off in performance is more likely to be me rather than the clubs, however much I might convince myself otherwise! Good video incidentally.

yeah, that's an interesting one Hannah. I literally got my RadSpeed clubs (newbie) and the funny thing was I had thought to myself.. when would I have to change these? I'll improve over time, but your advice is quite sound. When performance drops, replace. Maybe an idea to do some product reviews on club covers? I'd love to buy some (happy to fork out some cash for them) but unsure which to choose or where to go? Suggestions welcome! Always a treat to get info from you and this channel. Cheers, Dann

Irons was better built back in the days than todays irons. I have played irons from 1970-1989 that looks better than todays irons. Had a set of Slazenger B51 Mark1 that was in mint condition. Really nice irons too. Every year I do a Custom fitting just to see if there is any irons that is better for my game. I also do a Bag fitting to check loft and lie every year. Next year I will replace my irons and will do a Custom fitting.

Eeek!! My blades from 1997 might have seen their best days then 🙈⛳️, bit like me probably!

I realised I needed my first set of replacement irons when the heads started flying off the first set!

For me .. I play 1 or 2 times a month. So now just on my 4th set of irons. Woods every 5 years. Putter three times. All over a period of about 35 years .. so every 8-10 years I guess. Confession I still have all of them. 😂😂

Hannah, excellent review. One question. Would you change your irons based on the change of your handicap?

Crazy as it may be, I've had about 24 sets of irons in the last 6-7 years or so. One might say I've got a bit of a problem.

I like to stay 'current' but not change everytime a new set is released. So, I've had my current set for 2 seasons. May buy a new set for next season, but that is more about wanting to try another set, not needing another set.

been playing my Big Bertha's since 2006.... looking at upgrading to the Apex line to get away from the "game improvement" irons.

I’m Quite the equipment junkie 🤤 so I have to have the latest n greatest as well as 3 to 4 sets in the house to choose from every time I step out 😅

I feel I may be developing an irreversible and everlasting problem that’s incurable 😵
