In this video, Garth Schulte covers the major functions of Microsoft’s SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS). He’ll define what SSRS is and what it does, then explain the three primary components that sit on the server side: databases, web services, and window services.

SQL Server Reporting Services is Microsoft’s reporting solution tool that comes with SQL Server as an optional install. It’s part of the business intelligence suite of tools that you can use to work with data, allowing users to view reports as well as customize and create their own.

SSRS isn’t a single tool. It’s a collection of tools and services to create, build, deploy, view, and manage a variety of reports for almost every conceivable variable. In a traditional reporting system, you would have to hire someone internally that was skilled enough to build reports. The primary benefit of SSRS, however, is its ease of use.

I am still at a loss as to what is being reported. SQL statement efficiencies, number of records hit over time or what?
