SIR WALTER RALEIGH’S HEAD at ST MARY’S CHURCH

I have Returned to the Grade 1 Listed St Mary's Church in West Horsley, a Flint Saxon Building Dating from 1030 by a Saxon Thane called Thored and most likely replacing a much earlier Structure. Under the floor of the Chapel lies the Head of Sir Walter Raleigh which had been kept at nearby West Horsley Place for several Years. His Head is Buried along with his Two Eldest Sons Walter and Carew, together with his Baby Granddaughter.

Well, that Wasn’t Going to Happen then?

So nice to see inside - the 5 year wait was worth it! A lot of the outside of the church was rendered but nice the tower is still showing its flint and stone. I visited Sherbourne Castle which was built by Walter Raleigh and think I heard the story about his head being delivered back there? Or maybe it was to the manor you mentioned instead....
