I had many reasons to take up piano in my middle years, but a key one is mental health. Apart from benefits to depression and anxiety, it's incredibly important to learn new, complex skills as you get older. It helps the brain harden up against dementia, alzheimers, etc.

The piano saved me from falling in a depression a few years ago and makes me just happy. It also helps me to face difficult parts of life.
I cannot imagine my life without piano anymore :)

I started playing piano when I got sad because I moved to another city to study. I learned piano as a way of coping and now it's been a year and I still love playing piano. I got a progress, I'm learning music theory now and I will learn how to read sheet music next. I have that passion and I hopw I won't lose it. I created something beautiful in the midst of darkness, and piano playing helps me to beat that sadness.

Thank you Lisa, All true. Learning piano or any instrument, can create an overcoming spirit, especially when it comes to learning difficult techniques and new pieces, pushing through to master them. It is a well-known fact playing piano can boost intelligence and keep your mind active. However, convincing people to get into playing is another matter. Many people put off playing music because they feel they lack the talent. And some who play another instrument feel they lack the L & R hand coordination.
If playing piano is so easy, we would all be playing it. Know a few people who took lessons before but no longer play. They or their parents spent a lot of money on lessons and they can't play a tune at a family gathering. The problem is that traditional lessons tend to turn playing music into an academic exercise than encouraging people to make music.
