The ozone layer hole refers to a depletion of the ozone layer, which is a protective layer of ozone gas in the Earth's stratosphere. This depletion is primarily caused by the release of certain man-made chemicals called ozone-depleting substances (ODS), such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and halons. These chemicals break down ozone molecules, thinning the ozone layer and allowing more ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun to reach the Earth's surface. The ozone layer hole over Antarctica was a major environmental concern, leading to the Montreal Protocol in 1987, an international treaty aimed at phasing out the production and consumption of ODS. Thanks to this treaty, the ozone layer is slowly recovering, but it's important to continue efforts to protect it.
